17-3-2015

The idea for Kahkaha was born when we realized that children in the camps lack a space to play safely, away from the risks of electrocution, harassment, and drugs. The exchange helps to further integrate young Palestinians with Lebanese society. Through Kahkaha, these children will acquire three skills: the ability to cooperate, to exchange, and to participate in making a change.

Kahkaha, which means laughter in Arabic and Turkish, is about fun and encouragement. Through participating in the activities, we aim to allow both our volunteers and young Palestinians to learn about each other, laugh together, and increase the feeling of belonging. So far, Kahkaha has built three playgrounds in two different camps: Bourj El Barajneh; and Sabra and Shatila (see video of these playgrounds here:http://vimeo.com/85532351). We estimate that approximately 18,400 children have benefited from these three playgrounds. The 2nd of April we are making a fund raising event to be able to create the fourth playground in Sabra and Shatila! Its in the Back door 25$ Entrance (apperetivo + beer+ live Music + DJ).

Your presence is important for us to make it happen!

There is Tombola with really nice prices! The ticket is 5000 L.L

Building playgrounds is a need and everybody agree on that. Many people in this two years were involved in Kahkaha and they were excited to join our family.

This time our ambitions get bigger and we wanted to renovate and create a garden in Bourj El Barajneh, for Al Qassam kinder garden who works with 250 kids every year.

This project was funded by the Italian Cooperation/Italian Embassy in Beirut.

The architecture plan was donated by "Avatar Architettura" (Nicola Santini/ Pier Paolo Taddei)

The contractor "Architect Bachir Khoury".

It's really hard to explain the satisfaction of the changes we made in this space.
You have to just look to the pictures below!

This long time we were putting a new roof (Zinco) and new curtains. There were no attendance from the volunteers every Saturday but Lina khoury was following the process of the work of  installing the roof and the curtains.
But the big surprise was, that we found out that we are out of money after we putted the roof and we couldn't afford the curtains. But Ciara Flanagan one of the volunteers of Kahkha manged it with her family abroad to provide us money to afford the curtains.
A big thank you to Ciara in making it happen to Kahkaha once again.

3d November 2012

The 13th of September was our first day of work in Sabra and Shatila, This day was a big push for the project Because everybody in the camp showed there interest. And they show it the first week when all the neighborhood gathered themselves during the week and cleaned the playground. It was a big Surprise for us the first Saturday because they finished what we had to do, so we start paiting directly.
The second week it was fantastic when the kids showed a big commitement by arriving on time and promised to stay with us till the end.
Kahkha project is making it happen again and inviting people to get out of comfort zone to make a change.

Finally, a big thank you for all the volunteers for there motivation. enthusiasm and help. We are lucky to have you every Saturday.

9th June

kahkaha moved to Dubai Residents who knew about kahkaha and wanted to help. the motivation of Scott Thoresen and Fathima Mohiuddin, inspired me a lot. There idea of organising this big fund raising event for kahkaha was impressive.
There were no words to thank them, for this huge help to make it happen again in Sabra and Shatila camp and be able to build a new and safe playground for the kids there.
A big thank you guys for your huge effort!!

We started to prepare the wall to pain the master piece of art made by the kids. But, unfortunately the people of the house after we prepared and painted in white thaey colored it in orange. But we are happy we gave them the motivation:)

3d March

We needed to finish the roof and paint the other part of the playground made for activities. With the help of Julius, Taymour and Talia. We finished the roof finally! with a big satisfaction.

Later we gathered kids from the camp to draw pictures about nature. So Matias and Jorgen with the Help of Adrian and Edward, can transform all the drawings in a big painting on the wall.

25th February

We finished the playground. After three months, we finished the playground and we had kids to try the safety of the beautiful playground. Check this.

18th February

Finally the playground took place and shape in Bourj El Barajneh camp. We are so satisfied from the result. It's just what the kids deserve.

11th February

We finished the wall and we wrote on it the rights of the pupils, hoping is going to make a change in the schools. And stop them in a way to not use any kind of violence with the pupils.

4th February

As the team is growing and becoming nearly professional painters our work pace is increasing. Like this we've prepared the next huge wall to deliver a useful message to the kids on their ways to and back from school.

We hadn't even started painting. Still, the pupils we're aleady very curious.

Stay in touch to know what is going to happen the coming weekend!

28th January

Today we finished the walls we had started to paint the week before. Painting a wall white seems to be only a relatively small improvement but check out the difference of what it was like before and after...

The "tunnel" before we painted it...
... and after.

21st January

This week end we were achieving one of our objectives in the camp to paint the dark streets in the camp. And since our main goal is to make a change in the physical environment of the camp and to create awareness about that inside the community of the camp. Therefore, this Saturday, we were so proud to see that our spirit was contagious to a group of people from the camp who were painting the walls too.

Borj el Barajneh kids together with Kemo

In addition, we decided to join forces with the above mentioned group of youth from the camp who had also started to do a number of paintings. Together, we think, our chances to really make a difference are even better.

15th January

24th December

In response to Lina's call for Christmas support we received quite a lot of gifts to distribute to 30 lucky kids of Borj el Barajneh. However, since Santa was busy we called upon our extra-terrastrian mates Ali Akhdar & Zaree3 Khodra to help us out.

One could say we were very lucky in the circumstances because they did an even better job than the old pal could have ever done, don't you agree!?! ;-)

18th December

On Sunday the Recycling Clothes workshop continued and the participants produced some nice bags made of old pants.

17th December

On Saturday, by filling the sketches we'd put on the wall the week before,
we completed the first painting...

... right before it started to rain heavily. Fortunately, Jorgen had brought an umbrella with him.

11th December
This Sunday it was the workshop of Beatrice Harb. After the first presentation in front of the participants last Sunday. Beatrice started with the candidates to work on making bracelets from plastic bottles. Therefore, we assumed that the work of recycling began and the bracelets made by the participants were so beautiful.

10th December

Everybody was motivated this morning to draw the picture on the wall that we painted last week. Therefore, we started after a big brain storming, to draw the drawing of environment on the wall by pencil. At 2 pm, we finished the first step and we are ready to color the picture with paint next week.

4th December

We started painting the wall and Matias and gorgen were there to document what is happening. And the surprise was when all the people passing wanted to help in painting.

After all we created a good energy in the camp, actually it's the spirit that we were hoping to create and to feel it.:)

For the installation of a playground as described in our activities this week the construction of the roof was completed.

Here's the video of our infamous Norwegian friends Matias and Jorgen who helped us out and are supporting us with everything they've got. Cheers for that!

26th November

At 11:00 am we started the day to choose the places that we are going to paint and the themes of the drawings that can touch the society and in a way to change the perspective of the community.
Our first theme its going to be about the environment and the second about the education.
So the work is going to start next Saturday. Don't forget to check again the blog for the updates of our work.
These are the places we checked and we are going to start with this wall next week and with the other dark street the week after.

20th November

We started by the workshop of Beatrice Harb (recycling clothe activity).
She presented a slide show for the participants about the work that they will be doing on clothes. 20 people attended, were so excited and motivated about the sessions to come.
We want to thank Loft by Aspuces for the materials that they donated to the workshop.
